Eligibility for an Indian Passport 

Indian citizens over the age of 18 can apply for a passport. Minors under the age 18, including newborns, can also also get a passport given that the appropriate procedure is followed. 

Where to get the Passport Reference Number 

  1. Apply for the passport
  2. Submit the application form 
  3. Pay the registration fee
  4. Receive the passport reference number

The application will have to be submitted at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK). Senior citizens do not need to make any appointment for this and can direct walk into the PSK. Once you submit the required documents and the required biometrics you will be given the number.

  • The number can be used to check the status of your passport application online. Any delays or the general timeline will be communicated through this procedure. You can visit the passport office once you find out your status online. 

How is the Passport Reference Number is Compiled 

It is an alphanumeric code that is made up of alphabets and numbers in addition to your year of application for your passport. The number begins with the letters of the name of the location where you applied for the passport  from. It ends with the year of your application. There are six digits between the alphabets and the year.
