On 29 April 1959, the 14th Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) set up the Tibetan exile administration in Mussouri. In May 1960, the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) was transferred to Dharamshala. This made Dharamshala the main center of the Tibetan world in India. The 1959 Tibetan uprising had caused Tibetan refugees to follow the Dalai Lama into India. There is also a meditation hall with thangkas and statues and a kalachakra temple. The complex is also a garden, cafeteria, book shop and a library.
